Patrick L. Brockett holds the Gus Wortham Chair in Risk Management and Insurance, with joint professor appointments in the departments of Finance; Mathematics; and Information, Risk, and Operations Management.

 

He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, the American Statistical Association, the Royal Statistical Society, and the Institute for Risk Management. An elected member of the International Statistical Institute, Brockett is also a life member of the International Actuarial Association.

He served as editor of The Journal of Risk and Insurance for nine years, and he has served on the board of directors and as president of the American Risk and Insurance Association. Currently he is a co-editor of the North American Actuarial Journal after serving for nine years as editor.

His articles have won awards from the American Risk and Insurance Association, the American Statistical Association, the Society of Actuaries, the International Insurance Society, the Casualty Actuarial Society, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, as well as the Faculty of Actuaries of Scotland and Institute of Actuaries in England.

 

Among authors of articles published in the top-tier Journal of Risk and Insurance from 1989 to 2010, based on the number of citations to these articles from 1989 to 2014, he ranked No. 3 in the world in terms of number of citations by JRI articles, and No. 3 among all JRI authors in the world in terms of the number of non-insurance journal citations received.

In a 2013 article about the most prolific contributors to the world’s three most elite journals in risk management and insurance during the previous 10 years, weighted by their impact factor, he ranked No. 1 in the world.

Recent research awards include the Best 2018 North American Actuarial Journal Article Award from the Society of Actuaries, the 2017 Spencer L. Kimball Prize from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and the 2016 Best North American Actuarial Journal Article Award from the Society of Actuaries.

Brockett received a B.A. from California State University, Long Beach, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Irvine, all in mathematics.
