In-Depth Care with a Focus on Business
The Health Care Reform & Innovation Minor is open to current undergraduate students of all majors at UT Austin. Our program curriculum offers:
- Practicum courses that provide experience with real-world issues in partnership with local healthcare agencies such as Dell-Seton, Dell Children’s Medical Center, and volunteer charity clinics.

2. OM 334M/OM 235H: Health Care Operations Management
- Prerequisite: Statistics
- OM 235H is required for Business Honors.
- OM 334M is preferred to OM 235 for all Business students; however, completing OM 235 prior to admission to the minor program will count toward the course requirement with one credit waived.

What are the requirements for admission/acceptance into the program?
- Students must be on or switch to the 20/22 catalog. Your major must be on the same catalog as the minor.
- Submit an essay no longer than 250 words focusing on your career plans in healthcare and how the minor will help you achieve your goals.
- Previous work experience, internships, or volunteer work at a healthcare-related company or clinic is preferred.
- Membership in a healthcare-related student organization is also preferred.
Do I have to apply?
Yes. There is a process for applying to a Minor and officially pursuing it. We take care of one of the steps for you.
1. Give yourself time to complete all requirements for the Minor.
- You should have at least two semesters remaining until graduation before you apply.
- If you need three or fewer courses to complete the minor, you can apply closer to graduation.
2. Complete our online registration form (including the essay). The form will be available during the registration period.
- Fall registration period: Sept. 1 – Oct. 1
- Spring registration period: Feb. 1 – Mar. 31
3. If you are accepted into the program, we will enter your application into UT’s new certificate system. You will receive an automated email from the Registrar’s Office once that has processed that will direct you to your major/home college advisor. You must have your advisor add the Minor to your degree profile within two weeks of receiving the email.

When will I receive a response to my application?
The admissions review process is typically completed before the first registration period in October (for Spring semester) and March (for Fall semester). We will notify you of your acceptance into the program.
If you are not accepted, you will be elgible to reapply the following application period. We will consider your previous application when evaluating your new application for admission.
Remember: You should have at least two semesters remaining until graduation unless you need three or fewer courses to complete the program. If you need more than three of the required courses, you won’t have enough time to complete them. You must complete all program courses to be eligible for graduation.
What is the deadline to apply?
Our Fall application period is September 1 – October 1.
Our Spring application period is February 1 – March 1.

Can I receive credit for courses taken outside of UT Austin?
Equivalents to ACC 311 will be accepted as transfer credit for non-business majors only.
Business majors must complete the required 18 hours from the list outlined in the UT Austin course catalog.
Are there any substitutions for courses if they're full?
We highly recommend that you contact us with questions about substitiutions.
Can I take courses on a pass/fail basis?
No. You must take all courses on a letter grade basis to get credit for completing the Minor.
What are the Study Abroad opportunities?
You can complete a Study Abroad with the Texas Global Office, earning N309 credit and up to 16 hours from the world renowned University of Sydney in Sydney, Australia with the Semester Plus: Global Health Program.

The Maymester (May – June) course, International Perspectives on Design in Healthcare (BME 320/CHE 379/ME 379M) is another opportunity to study abroad and get elective credit. This course is offered/run by the Cockrell School of Engineering’s International Engineering Education and requires no math or physics background or prerequisites. The course is open to all majors and admissions happen on a rolling basis.
How long does the program take to complete?
The Minor requires six unique courses (18 semester hours) in addition to any prerequisites you may need before enrolling in a required course.
Courses can be completed at your own pace; however, several of our upper-division courses are only offered in certain semesters.
