The Risk Management Certificate program requires eighteen semester hours of coursework as described below. Twelve hours are business coursework: six hours of risk management, three hours of accounting, and three hours of finance. An additional six elective hours relevant to risk management are selected by the student, with a maximum of 3 hours allowed from the McCombs School of Business.

Admission to the program is based on a student’s overall academic record, including, but not limited to:
- Hours and number of courses taken in residence,
- Demonstrated interest in risk management, and
- Overall UT GPA.
In addition, students seeking admission to the Risk Management Certificate program must:
- Be a full-time, degree-seeking UT Austin undergraduate student.
- Follow the guidelines outlined in the application procedures.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
Application Procedures
The Risk Management Certificate is available to both business and non-business majors. The specific program you choose depends on the Undergraduate Catalog that was in effect when you first enrolled in classes at UT Austin.
- Students in the 2020-2022 Undergraduate Catalog should apply for the Risk Management Minor.
- Students in the 2016-2018 or 2018-2020 Undergraduate Catalog should apply for the Risk Management Certificate.
Applying for the Risk Management Minor:
Step 1: Submit an application via the Registrar Document Submission for minors.
Step 2: Enter your EID.
- From the Field of Study pull-down menu, choose Risk Management.
- Confirm your choice and submit the application.
Applying for the Risk Managment Certificate:

Once admitted, you must contact your academic advisor to have the Risk Management Minor or Certificate attached to your degree profile. The credential cannot be awarded to you when you graduate from UT Austin if it has not been added to your degree profile.
